Fatty, Fatty, Five by Five

Obesity in the workplace costs money__lots of it. Obesity in the home costs a lot of money, too. Obesity causes early death, heart disease, diabetes and about any other bad thing you can think of.

We don't exercise. We set at a computer or behind the wheel of a car. As addicts, we ingest fast calorie food of oversized portions 6 to 8 times a day. We constantly swig on a sugar laden soft drink in a container that requires it be held by two hands.

One reason we eat so much and so often may be because our food suppliers never let the land rest. They continue to bleed the soil and send us food with less and less nutrients. Consequently, people become overweight trying to eat enough to satisfy their hunger.

Crop rotation is one way for the land to restore itself. Even the Bible mentions resting the land for 7 years and planting it every 7 years.

With current high priced land, our large food suppliers are probably not interested in that formula. The planting of legumes, alfalfa and any number of nutrient replacing crops could build up the nutritional value of food to the extent that the consumer might be more satisfied with smaller portions.

One bright spot is the news of Hoodia Gordinii, the African cactus plant that curbs the appetite by making the brain think it is not hungry. Many good results are coming from the weight loss products that contain this plant.

We have to do something. There are too many at risk. There are too many suffering because of obesity.
