A Little Extra Weight Can Shorten Your Life Research has shown that being obese (30+ pounds over a healthy weight) increases the risk of premature death, but what about those who are 1-29 pounds overweight? Researchers with the National Cancer Institute recently did a study, examining over 527,000 adults. This study revealed that even being a little overweight does increase chances for premature death. Findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine stated that overweight 50 year olds have a 20-40% higher risk of death, and obese people had 100-200% higher risk of death."Even carrying a few extra pounds is associated with increased risk of dying prematurely," says Michael Leitzmann, author of the study. Meir Stampfer of the Harvard School of Public Health, says the study shows "in a very convincing and clear way that being overweight is bad for you. When you get in the obese range, the risk of death goes up substantially." Tim Byers of the University of Colorado Medical School, urges people to take steps to lose weight - or at least stop gaining: walk more, eat smaller portions, reduce snacking. "Everyone who is overweight needs to look at their situation and figure out how they can eat less and move more." Dr. William Kellas, Ph.D., Founder of the Center for Advanced Medicine, explains that we eat more food than we are designed to handle. This taxes our ability to digest food, which increases the level of undigested food in our intestines, which leads to more toxicity in our bodies. The increased toxins lead to extra weight and less than optimal health. He suggests that an easy way to remedy overeating is to drink an Seven Essentials about 30 minutes before eating. You’ll get great nutrition and curb your appetite! |

“The rising
obesity rate in the U.S. is a risk to the health of pregnant women and
their babies. Obesity among women of childbearing age is at a crisis
level. We’re concerned because it means more women are overweight or
obese when they become pregnant, and this can have serious consequences
for both mother and baby.’’ “Pregnant obese women are at increased risk for pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery and postpartum infection. The baby is also at increased risk for neural tube defects, birth trauma and fetal death.’’ ~Laura Riley, M.D., Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Pathology at Harvard Medical School |

D IABETES is a disorder where blood sugar levels are abnormally high. Pregnancy brings many changes that can alter blood sugar, or glucose levels.GESTATIONAL DIABETES may develop or become apparent for the fist time during a pregnancy. GESTATIONAL DIABETES occurs when pregnancy hormones or other factors interfere with the body's ability to use its insulin. Untreated or poorly controlled GESTATIONAL DIABETES can hurt the unborn baby. With this condition, you can’t produce enough insulin to lower your blood glucose levels. The extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels, which prompts the baby's pancreas to make extra insulin. Babies with excess insulin become children at risk for obesity and adults at risk for TYPE 2 DIABETES. |
