The Real Essence of Life

Water has been ranked by experts as second only to oxygen, as essential for life. An ongoing intake of water is absolutely essential to every bodily function. Drink the appropriate amount of water and everything is more likely to function at optimal levels. However, do not drink enough water and you may experience fatigue, dry skin, headaches, constipation, and more. Over time, all body functions will degrade more quickly without drinking enough water.

How many sodas have you had this week?

Before you grab that next soda, consider this:  one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30-55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. Plus, studies have linked soda to osteoporosis, obesity, and heart disease, and much more.

A federally funded study of 3,200 Americans, ages 9 to 29, showed a direct link between tooth decay and soft drinks. Numerous other studies have shown the same link throughout the world. A team of Harvard researchers recently presented the first evidence linking soft drink consumption to obesity. They spent 19 months monitoring a group of children and found that kids who drank soda regularly were more likely to be overweight than those who didn’t. For every additional sugary drink consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times.

The Harvard team also found that kids who drank soda consumed 200 more calories per day than their counterparts who didn’t down the soda. They also conducted a meta-analysis of similar research conducted over the past 25 years. They found that drinking sugary calories does NOT register with the brain the same way that eating calories does. The brain gets confused by the sugary liquid calories that pass quickly through the stomach, and they do not trigger

feelings of satiety. Without a signal that calories were consumed (via soda) the stomach cannot tell the brain to quit eating. In this way, excess pounds are added.

Sugary drinks providing calories, sugar and caffeine, but NO significant nutritional value, are actually depriving us of many important vitamins and minerals. Researchers noted that between 1994 and 1995, soda consumption rose 41%, displacing milk and juice, which had been the leading sources of vitamins and minerals. Drinking soda even parallels alcohol in one profound similarity... When we drink so much sugar, our appetite for healthy food is suppressed, resulting in nutritional deficiencies.
