Resveratrol
in Red Wine May Combat Obesity
A compound called resveratrol is found in grapes and red wine.
Resveratrol reduces the number of fat cells in the body.
Researchers are trying to figure out a way to use it to treat or prevent
obesity.Resveratrol inhibits pre-fat cells from increasing and
prevents them from converting into mature fat cells. Resveratrol also
interferes with the storage of fat. This may explain why the
French, who have a diet of fat-rich foods and who also drink wine, have
a low rate of heart disease.
Many doctors prescribe a glass of wine to improve the health of the
heart after a heart attack.
But, studies have also shown that diets high in resveratrol may
increase the risk of breast cancer cell growth due to the chemical
makeup of resveratrol being similar to the estrogen protein.
Studies need to be done to see exactly why resveratrol helps the
body, but also what negatives can be found with it too. |
