Bacteria: Is it Good or Bad?
While many species of bacteria are bad, there are many more that are
beneficial to us. In fact, humans require good bacteria for a
healthy body.
These good bacteria begin growing almost immediately after we are
born and live in the mouth, digestive tract and vagina.
Some of these good bacteria keep the intestinal lining of the
digestive tract healthy and boost immunity. They also ward off bad
bacteria due to a lack of room for both and by changing the intestinal
environment to make them less likely to thrive. Good bacteria also
works with the body's cells to maintain the supply of vitamin K and
folic acid. Good bacteria protect women against vaginal infections by
producing natural disinfectants that balance pH and good microorganisms.
Probiotics
are bacteria that are very beneficial for women are Lactobacillus
rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri which combat fungal and
bacterial vaginal infections. They keep bad bacteria and fungi
from growing. Oral probiotics, along with antibiotics, can help
stave off bacterial infections in women who are prone to them. |
