Ringworm
Ringworm is an infection which is caused by a fungus which lives and
multiplies on the outer layer of the skin. It is not a worm or a
parasite of any kind.
The most common forms of the fungi are Trichophyton rubrum, which is
spread from person to person, and Microsporum canis, which is spread by
dogs and cats. Microsporum canis is not as common, but it does
cause ma more serious infection.
The fungus are nearly everywhere, but they grown well in moist, warm
areas such as swimming pools and locker rooms. Ringworm is spread
by sharing contaminated clothing, towels or sports equipment. You
should be able to treat ringworm with over-the-counter antifungal creams
or ointments such as Lamisil, Lotrimin, Micatin, Monistat or Tinactin. |
