Common Allergensragweed

Animal Dander - Dander is tiny protein particles, the flaky dried skin, shed from any animals with hair or feathers. These proteins are secreted by the glands in the skin, but are also found in animal urine and saliva. The most common sources of dander are: cats, dogs, pet birds, rabbits, and rodents.

Chemicals - Cosmetics and laundry detergents are common allergens.  They tend to cause an itchy rash or hives.  Household cleaners and pesticides can also cause allergic reactions.

Dust and Dust Mites - Dust is more prone to be airborne on humid, windy days. Dust mites are tiny and live in house dust.

Food - Milk, cheese, eggs, soy, wheat, tree nuts, seafood and peanuts are common food allergens.  Food allergies are most common in infants.  They are often outgrown.  Symptoms can include a tingling sensation in the mouth, swelling of tongue and throat, hives, vomiting, abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, a drop in blood pressure and, loss of consciousness.

Grass - Avoid mowing the lawn or being around freshly cut grass if possible.

Insect Bites and Stings - The poison in insect bites or stings can cause allergic reactions.  These allergies can cause anaphylactic reaction in severe cases.  Symptoms of a sting or bite can include swelling of the whole arm or leg, or hives.  In severe reactions, insect stings can cause swelling beyond the affected area, itching all over the entire body or even difficulty breathing.

Medicines - The most common medicinal allergens are antibiotics, but many over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin, can cause allergic reactions.

Mold - If it is windy or rainy, it is best to stay indoors.  Mold can become airborne in these conditions.  Mold can land on your clothing if hung outside to dry.

Pollen - Pollen is more prone to be airborne on humid, windy days.  Pollen counts are reduced when it is rainy or no wind.  Symptoms include sneezing, congestion and itchy or watery eyes.  Pollen can land on your clothing if hung outside to dry.
