The
prostate gland is located in the pelvic area and surrounds the urethra. The prostate
is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland
is made up of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. The
prostate is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, where urine
is stored. The prostate the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out
of the body. The prostate gland's main purpose is to squeeze fluid into
the urethra as sperm moves through during sexual climax. This fluid, which helps
make up semen, energizes the sperm and makes the vaginal canal less acidic. Prostate enlargement is often marked by frequent trips to the bathroom. Other common symptoms include trouble starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. Prostate enlargement, also known as, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is commonplace for men over the age of 50. By age 60, more than half the men have BPH, and by age 85 that number climbs to over 90%.
