Mineral Makeup
Mineral makeup has become all the
rage.
Manufacturers tout that mineral makeup is
made of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth. No
chemicals, dyes, or preservatives have been added like they have in
traditional makeup.
Mineral makeup is available in all
price ranges from many manufacturers. The most come forms are the
loose powder foundations and blushes. These are light, finely ground
loose minerals that are swirled onto the skin using a wide brush.
Some users love it while others say it dries out
their skin and makes wrinkles more apparent.
But, the main reason people love it is that it is
"all-natural" and it is better for your skin. Is it really?
The main ingredients in most of
them are really minerals such as mica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide.
But, these have actually been used in makeup for years. Mineral
makeup can still cause problems the same as any other makeup, because it
is not really purer.
The main difference in them and conventional makeup
products is that they do not contain binders, dyes, fragrances or
preservatives which can irritate the skin and cause problems.
They may be better on some people's skin because
the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties
and it doesn't clog pores. So, sufferers of rosacea or acne might
see an improvement with the mineral makeup.
The titanium dioxide and zinc
oxide are ingredients in sunscreens. So, of course, it does offer
some protection for your skin against damage from the sun. But,
you would still need a conventional sunscreen for prolonged exposure.
Make sure you read the ingredient list. Some
manufacturers do use fillers and preservatives while other stick to the
natural theme.
Try to stay away from products that contain
bismuth oxycholoride. It is what gives many
products the healthy glow they promote. Bismuth actually comes as
a byproduct of copper and lead processing. While it is a mineral,
it can irritate the skin. Avoid this especially if you have
sensitive skin. Don't use any products with this ingredient if you
have acne or rosacea.
Some manufacturers crush the minerals down so fine
that they become a nanoparticle. This can cause them to have
different properties than the same product in a large form.
Titanium and zinc are safe to the skin, but when reduced so small, it
may not be. And, if you skin is damaged or if you inhale these
tiny particles, it might not be safe.
And, what about the claim that it is so natural
that you can sleep it. NO. Never sleep in makeup of any
kind! |
