Botox
Botox is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure with
nearly 3 million treatments in the U.S. in 2007.
Botulinum toxin is used to reduce
wrinkles between your eyebrows by blocking the nerve cells' release of
acetylcholine which contracts muscles. The botox injection causes
existing frown line to smooth out in about 7 days. It is used to treat
eye muscle disorders, excessive sweating under the arms and neck or
shoulder spasms. The wrinkle removing was actually discovered when
it was a side effect of a medical treatment. But, the FDA released a
warning in February 2008 that stated botox patients should beware of
symptoms of botulism such as drooping eyelids, dry mouth, difficulty
swallowing, difficulty breathing, difficulty holding your head upright,
muscle weakness, and slurred speech. If you do use botox, use the
lowest effective dose and receive injections no more than once every
three months. Call your doctor immediately if you notice any of the
side effects after a cosmetic injection. |
