Organic Food - What is it?
Organic does NOT mean that there are not synthetics in your food.
There are 38 ingredients that have been approved for use in organically
grown foods. Normal foods are allowed more than 3,000 chemicals
that can be added to processed foods..
Farms must adhere to the following guidelines in order to be
certified organic:
They cannot use synthetic fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or sewage
sludge for 3 years before being certified organic and can't use these
after they are certified.
They cannot use genetically modified organisms or irradiation.
They must use conservation, soil building, manure management and crop
rotation.
They must provide outdoor access and pasture for all livestock.
They can not use antibiotics or hormones in animals.
Animals must eat 100% organic feed.
Farms must not contaminate foods during the processing of organic
products.
They must keep records of all their operations. |
