Just a short time ago,
WHEY was only on the fringe of mainstream consciousness, being used primarily by bodybuilders. Considering WHEY’S historical use as a medicinal food, going as far back as the time of Hippocrates, it's encouraging to see that many researchers are discovering WHEY’S benefits for a wide variety of ailments, and have started to give this functional food the attention it deserves. Two recent studies show WHEY may have beneficial effects on both the body and mind. Because WHEY has so many other benefits, such as possible cancer prevention, immune system enhancement and body building, it should be a staple food supplement in any anti-aging and anti-disease regimen!Whey protein dramatically raises glutathione levels. Glutathione is an essential water-soluble antioxidant that protects cells and detoxifies toxins such as peroxides, heavy metals and carcinogens. It is also tied closely to immunity. Reduced glutathione levels are associated with diseases such as AIDS, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. In fact, glutathione levels appear to be one way of modulating immunity. A small pilot study was done with HIV-positive men. Of all the study participants, those who were fed whey protein found dramatic increases in glutathione levels. Whey protein was found to consistently raise this extremely important immune stimulating antioxidant beyond that of any protein studied (including soy) to higher than normal levels in multiple animal studies.
In fact, there have been several patents granted for the treatment of AIDS and improving immunity with whey protein concentrates. Whey protein improves immune function and fights infections. Animals fed
whey protein concentrate consistently showed dramatic enhancement of both the humoral and cellular immune response to a variety of immune challenges, such as salmonella, streptococcus pneumonia 9 and extreme cancer-causing chemicals. This effect on immunity was not seen with other proteins.
